Girls ARt & maker group

Empowering immigrant and refugee women through creative expression.

ARYSE Girls Art & Maker Group is a monthly meet-up for refugee and immigrant women who either attended PRYSE Academy or have been referred to ARYSE. Girls involved in ARYSE Girls Art and Maker Group meet every first Saturday of the month at Point Park University.

The program was developed after ARYSE Staff and Volunteers observed that young women enrolled at PRYSE Academy were reluctant to share their work in front of a larger group. Because of this, the program is purposefully designed to cater towards a smaller group. It is also created to be a safe space that encourages our participants to share their art while also pushing them out of their comfort zones.

The program includes curricula that combines creative expression projects, facilitated dialogue sessions, and field trips to art spaces and cultural landmarks throughout Pittsburgh.

ARYSE teaching artist, Hana Swift, carries out this curricula by facilitating lessons in creative expression that incorporate themes around healthy relationships, self-care, and storytelling.

The program culminates in an exhibition where participants will display their work at a public showcase in May. Community members and the girls’ family members will be invited to attend, and the current cohort of young women is comprised of approximately 10 young women.

The overall purpose of the group is to bring together young immigrant women to create art, share their stories, develop friendships, gain mentorship from each other and adult facilitators, and to identify self-care strategies for managing stress and difficult personal situations.
